Keith Harris, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Arkansas 2023

LITTLE ROCK—A federal jury delivered a guilty verdict against Keith Harris, 24, of Sherwood, Arkansas, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Harris was convicted of the charge after a two-day trial that concluded with approximately two hours of deliberation.

The evidence presented at trial showed that on October 26, 2022, a law enforcement officer with the Little Rock Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a Dodge Challenger for speeding. Harris, who was a passenger, was on active parole with a search waiver on file. Harris was asked by law enforcement officers to step out of the vehicle to conduct a search of his person and the area of the car where he was seated.

During a search of the vehicle, law enforcement officers located a Glock, model 22, .40 caliber firearm under the seat where Harris had been sitting.

Harris was convicted by the state of Arkansas in 2019 for being a felon in possession of a firearm following an incident at a gas station in North Little Rock that resulted in the murder of a U.S. Air Force airman during an armed robbery. Harris, who was 18 at the time, was initially arrested for capital murder and aggravated robbery before pleading guilty to the lesser charge after police identified Harris as one of the four people involved in the incident. Harris received five years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections and was paroled in October 2021. Harris was also convicted as an adult of two counts of theft of property by threat of serious physical injury following an incident in 2016.

Harris will remain in federal custody pending sentencing by United States District Court Judge D.P. Marshall, Jr. The statutory penalty for being a felon in possession of a firearm is not more than 15 years imprisonment.

The present investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Little Rock Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Lauren Eldridge and Amanda Fields prosecuted the case.
