DETROIT – A Ypsilanti man is facing federal charges after a brazen act of road rage allegedly put Border Patrol agents and the detainees they were transporting at risk. Jacob Nathaniel Len, 30, has been charged with impeding, intimidating, or interfering with federal officers engaged in their official duties.
According to court documents, the incident unfolded July 7, 2025, on Interstate 96. Four uniformed U.S. Border Patrol agents, operating two marked vehicles, were en route to a Michigan correctional facility with fifteen individuals detained on immigration violations. Len, driving a BMW sedan, reportedly began harassing the agents, flipping them off with his middle finger. This escalated into a dangerous maneuver where Len cut in front of the lead transport van without signaling and then abruptly slammed on his brakes, forcing the driver to swerve to avoid a collision.
The driver of the trailing Border Patrol vehicle was also forced to brake sharply to avoid hitting the transport van. Len repeated this reckless act twice before exiting the freeway. This wasn’t just a case of bad driving; it was a calculated attempt to endanger lives, according to authorities. “The alleged actions of this man are shameful,” stated United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. “While zipping around in his BMW, this defendant cavalierly endangered the hardworking agents who put their lives on the line every day protecting our country, the illegal aliens they were tasked with safely transporting, and other drivers going about their lives.”
Federal investigators are taking this incident seriously. “Interfering with a federal agent performing their official duties is a serious criminal offense and will not be tolerated,” declared Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. “The alleged actions by Jacob Len were not only reckless, but endangered lives and compromised public safety.” Chief Patrol Agent John R. Morris of the U.S. Border Patrol, Detroit Sector, added, “Our agents are committed to carrying out their duties with professionalism and dedication, and we will not tolerate behavior that endangers their lives or the lives of others.”
Len appeared in federal court in Detroit earlier today and was released on bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 25 for a preliminary examination. The investigation was conducted by special agents from the FBI.
