In a shocking case of fentanyl trafficking, Keith Latteri, a 35-year-old San Francisco resident, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in distributing the deadly opioid.
According to court documents, Latteri was involved in a large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation that smuggled the potent substance into the San Francisco Bay Area. Authorities seized over 1 kilogram of fentanyl, valued at $100,000, in a series of raids conducted by the FBI and the San Francisco Police Department.
Latteri’s co-conspirators, who have also been charged in the case, include several high-ranking members of a notorious street gang. The gang’s leader, who has not been named due to ongoing investigations, is believed to have orchestrated the fentanyl trafficking operation.
‘Fentanyl is a highly addictive and deadly substance that has ravaged communities across the nation,’ said U.S. Attorney Eric C Nemecek, who prosecuted the case. ‘Today’s sentencing sends a clear message that those who engage in fentanyl trafficking will face severe consequences.’
Latteri’s attorneys, Maia Taussig Perez and Nikhil Bhagat, had argued that their client was a low-level player in the operation and should receive a lighter sentence. However, the court ultimately rejected their plea, citing the severity of the crime and the devastating impact it had on the community.
The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to combat fentanyl trafficking in the Bay Area. As the opioid epidemic continues to claim lives and destroy families, law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle fentanyl trafficking operations.
U.S. District Court Judge, for the Northern District of California, handed down the 10-year sentence, which will be followed by a 5-year period of supervised release. Latteri will also be required to pay a $100,000 fine and $500 in special assessments.
With his sentencing, Keith Latteri joins a growing list of individuals who have been convicted of fentanyl trafficking in the Bay Area. The case serves as a warning to others who would seek to profit from the suffering of others.
