Crime Victim Advocate Honored

Kansas City, Kan. – A tragic event in 2007 led to a mother’s crusade for justice. Missey Smith’s daughter, Kelsey, was abducted from a department store in Overland Park on June 2, 2007, and murdered.

Her brutal death sparked a drive for change. Missey Smith founded the Kelsey Smith Foundation to support victims of crime and to lobby for legislative reform. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed.

On Friday, April 12, Missey Smith will receive the Ronald Reagan Public Policy Award for her outstanding service to crime victims. This prestigious honor is given annually by the U.S. government to individuals and programs that foster changes in public policy and practice that benefit crime victims.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister praised Missey Smith’s work, saying, ‘Missey Smith and others are building a grassroots movement in America to support and protect victims of crime. I want to thank them all.’

Missey Smith’s proposed federal law, the Kelsey Smith Act, would require phone companies to provide cellphone location information to law enforcement officials in an emergency. This law aims to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Attorney General William P. Barr acknowledged the importance of recognizing those who serve crime victims, saying, ‘During this National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we pause to remember the millions of Americans who have been victims of crime and we thank public servants who have served them in especially heroic ways.’

Missey Smith is one of 12 individuals and programs being honored at the National Crime Victims’ Service Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. Her dedication to justice for crime victims serves as an inspiration to many.

The U.S. government’s recognition of Missey Smith’s work highlights the importance of advocating for victims’ rights. Her tireless efforts will continue to make a difference in the lives of those affected by crime.
