Kendrick Charged with Computer Intrusion
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced last week that 40-year-old Annette Kendrick, of Marietta, Georgia, has been arraigned on a charge of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer domain in violation of Title 18, United States code, Section 1030(a)(5)(A). The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley E. Tyler, in April 2013, employees of Iberdrola, a company headquartered in Rochester, New York, reported that Iberdrola was the victim of a computer intrusion. In response to that report, law enforcement agents determined that on or about April 4, 2013, the defendant Kendrick, using the log in credentials of another individual, logged into Iberdrola’s computerized job application system.
Kendrick allegedly modified a job posting, modified questions on the posting, sent e-mails to agencies about the posting, and sent e-mails to job applicants saying they were no longer being considered for the position.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred nearly a decade ago, in April 2013. The case highlights the ongoing threat of cybercrime and the importance of protecting sensitive information.
Kendrick is expected to appear in court again on September 12, 2013, according to Magistrate Judge Marian W. Payson.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Kendrick’s arraignment marks a significant step in the investigation, but the case is far from over. As the prosecution moves forward, it will be interesting to see how the evidence holds up in court.
