Lois McCorkle, Theft of Government Funds, Louisiana 2024

LOIS MCCORKLE, 68, of Kenner, Louisiana, stole more than a decade’s worth of Social Security benefits she never should’ve collected, funneling $105,320.98 in government funds into her pockets through a lie she never corrected. The federal government finally caught up, and today she’s facing the consequences—no prison, but years under the watchful eye of the law.

MCCORKLE pleaded guilty to theft of government funds and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to three years of probation. The court also ordered full restitution of $105,320.98 to the Social Security Administration. The sentence marks the end of a years-long deception that began more than two decades ago.

Court records reveal the scheme was simple but effective—at least for a while. On or about November 17, 2001, MCCORKLE got married. That marital status change triggered an immediate obligation to report to the SSA. She didn’t. Because her husband earned income, her eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) evaporated. But the checks kept coming—and she kept cashing them.

For years, MCCORKLE collected payments she knew were unlawful. Each disbursement was a reaffirmation of her fraud. She didn’t just slip through the cracks—she exploited them, banking on bureaucracy to look the other way. She didn’t. The Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General launched an investigation that peeled back the layers of her financial deception.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans, who oversaw the prosecution, credited the Inspector General’s office with bringing MCCORKLE to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen handled the case, building a paper trail that left no doubt about the duration and intent behind the fraud.

This case is a stark reminder: government benefits come with accountability. LOIS MCCORKLE may have avoided prison, but her name is now stamped to a federal conviction, and every dollar she stole must be repaid. In the underground economy of welfare fraud, she’s now just another cautionary tale caught in the government’s net.
