Washington – Isreal James Easterday, a 23-year-old from Munfordville, Kentucky, was sentenced today to 30 months in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach, where he assaulted police officers with pepper spray and engaged in violent behavior.
Easterday was found guilty of six felonies and three misdemeanors by a U.S. District Court jury on Oct. 26, 2023. These charges included civil disorder, assaulting officers, entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct.
According to trial evidence, Easterday traveled from Kentucky to Washington D.C., fueled by anger over election corruption claims. He joined the rioters who attempted to storm the Capitol building’s east side. During the chaos, he pepper-sprayed officers at point-blank range, temporarily incapacitating them and allowing other rioters to steal police equipment.
After breaching the East Rotunda doors, Easterday entered the Capitol with other rioters and roamed the third floor before exiting. He was arrested by FBI agents on Dec. 8, 2022, in Miami, Florida.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division. Easterday was also ordered to complete 500 hours of community service and pay $2,000 in restitution.
