BOSTON – Kerry Adams, 61, of Provincetown, Massachusetts, will spend the next 14 years behind bars after being sentenced today in federal court for horrific crimes against children. Judge Patti B. Saris delivered the sentence, alongside a 10-year period of supervised release, after Adams pleaded guilty in April to one count each of distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography.
The case unfolded as part of a covert U.S. Secret Service investigation targeting peer-to-peer networks used for the trafficking of deeply disturbing material. Over several months in 2019, agents tracked individuals sharing and obtaining illegal content. Agents were able to download child pornography files on four separate occasions directly from a computer traced back to Adams’s residence. The digital trail was undeniable.
On October 17, 2019, investigators raided Adams’s home, seizing laptops, thumb drives, and SD cards. A forensic review of one laptop immediately revealed folders containing the illicit files—the same files the undercover investigator had downloaded. A deeper dive into Adams’s devices uncovered hundreds of images and videos depicting the abuse of children, including images of two children known to the defendant. The scale of the depravity was sickening, according to sources close to the investigation.
Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, speaking alongside Frederick J. Regan, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service in Boston, and Barnstable Police Chief Matthew Sonnabend, made the announcement today. The investigation benefited from assistance provided by the Provincetown Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lindsey E. Weinstein and Anne Paruti spearheaded the prosecution.
This case is a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against child exploitation. It was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The program aims to protect children by coordinating federal, state, and local resources to locate predators, rescue victims, and bring abusers to justice. The Secret Service, while often associated with protecting national leaders, plays a significant role in combating cybercrime, including this type of horrific abuse.
Adams’s sentence sends a clear message: those who prey on children will be held accountable. The U.S. Attorney’s Office urges anyone with information about child exploitation to come forward. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to dismantle these networks of abuse.
