Kevin Elice Payne, Carjacking, Alabama 2018

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – In a shocking turn of events, Kevin Elice Payne, 20, has pleaded guilty to carjacking and using a firearm during a violent crime in Homewood, Alabama. The incident occurred on October 5, 2018 at a Walmart Supercenter on Lakeshore Parkway.

Payne and his co-defendant, Kenmarius Markeon Faulkner, 18, brutally took the victim’s car at gunpoint. Payne, wearing a ski mask, brandished a pistol and threatened to ‘blow her head off’ if she didn’t hand over her money. The victim was forced out of the vehicle, and the assailants sped away.

A Homewood Police Department patrol officer spotted the stolen vehicle on I-65 North and initiated a lengthy pursuit. The fleeing vehicle was eventually rammed, causing it to crash. Payne and Faulkner were taken into custody immediately.

Payne pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking and one count of using a firearm during a violent crime in U.S. District Court. His co-defendant, Faulkner, pleaded guilty to the same charges the day before.

The maximum penalty for carjacking is 15 years in prison. Brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, to be served consecutively to any other sentence imposed for the crime.

Kevin Elice Payne and Kenmarius Markeon Faulkner are scheduled for sentencing on April 17th. They will face a federal prison sentence for their heinous crimes.

The FBI and Homewood Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Felton prosecuting. U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town and FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp, Jr. have praised the work of local law enforcement in bringing this case to justice.

These violent defendants will now face the consequences of their actions. Their crimes are a stark reminder of the importance of community policing and the need for law enforcement to work together to combat violent crime.
