Savannah Police, Crime Reduction, Georgia 2023

The city of Savannah is getting a boost in its fight against crime as the Savannah Police Department is set to receive a $61,828 grant from the U.S. government under the Project Safe Neighborhoods program.

The grant, which was announced on September 10, will provide funding for surveillance cameras, fingerprint scanners, and GPS tracking systems for the Savannah Police Department, said U.S. Attorney Bobby L. Christine.

According to U.S. Attorney Christine, the Savannah Police Department is a vital partner in the city’s public safety network and the grant is a step towards providing them with the best equipment and cutting-edge technology.

The grant is part of a larger effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to reduce violent crime in the region. Other Southern District recipients of this year’s grants include the Brunswick Police Department, Glynn County Police Department, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, and the Augusta District Attorney’s Office.

Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter Jr. expressed his gratitude for the grant, stating that it will be extremely beneficial in furthering the department’s goals of reducing crime in Savannah.

Chief Minter added that his command staff is currently working on a deployment strategy to ensure that the new technology is used to its fullest capability to help identify and target offenders in the area.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and law enforcement agencies, including the Savannah Police Department, have a history of working together under the umbrella of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, which has been successful in reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
