Bank Robbery Ringleaders Sentenced to Decades in Prison

NEWNAN, Ga. – In a brazen takeover-style bank robbery, three masked gunmen terrorized employees of the United Bank in Woodbury, Georgia on June 28, 2018. The three suspects, Antavious Bray, Derrick Scott, and D’Asis Sheffield, have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the crime.

According to court documents, the three gunmen, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and handguns, stormed the bank and forced their way into the vault. They threatened bank employees and fled the scene through a back door, but were left stranded when their getaway driver abandoned them due to the quick response of the Woodbury Police Department.

As they fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, FBI agents captured Bray and Scott, who had broken into a nearby home to use as a hiding place. Sheffield remained at large until local news stations played a video clip of him walking through the backyard of a residence near the bank, leading to his eventual identification and arrest.

The three men each pled guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. In sentencing, Antavious Bray, 31, of Greenville, Georgia, was sentenced to 12 years, 10 months in prison, and five years of supervised release. Derrick Scott, 27, of Manchester, Georgia, was sentenced to 12 years, 10 months in prison, and five years of supervised release.

D’Asis Sheffield, 21, of Greenville, Georgia, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and five years of supervised release. All three men were also ordered to pay full restitution to the victims. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bret R. Hobson and Miguel R. Acosta as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative.

The sentencing of these three men sends a message that bank robbery will be aggressively investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, said Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, Chris Hacker. The Woodbury Police Department is committed to providing a safe community for all who live in or visit, and the assistance of law enforcement partners has been invaluable in bringing these perpetrators to justice.
