Kevin John Needham, Murder Charges, Minnesota 2011

MINNEAPOLIS—A devastating New Year’s Day tragedy on the Red Lake Indian Reservation has led to a superseding indictment against 21-year-old Kevin John Needham. Needham, previously charged with robbery, now faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder in connection to the deaths of Craig David Roy and Darla Ann Beaulieu. The bodies of the couple were found in the remains of their home, which was destroyed by fire on January 1, 2011.

According to the indictment, Needham, along with co-defendants Geshik-O-Binese Martin (30), Edward McCabe Robinson (28), David John Martin (46), of Columbia Heights, and George Allen Martin (24), of Red Lake, allegedly killed the victims while stealing money and illegal drugs from Roy’s residence. Autopsies revealed that both victims suffered multiple stab wounds, with the fire not being the cause of death.

All four co-defendants remain in federal custody, facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and robbery. If convicted, they could face life in federal prison, with no parole. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Deidre Y. Aanstad and Nathan P. Petterson.

The investigation into the murders was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Red Lake Tribal Police Department, with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the State Fire Marshal. The Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation, which led to the FBI’s involvement in the investigation.

An indictment is a determination by a grand jury that there is probable cause to believe that offenses have been committed by a defendant. Needham and his co-defendants are presumed innocent until they plead guilty or are proven guilty at trial.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of violent crime and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to bring perpetrators to justice. As this case unfolds, the community may find some solace in the knowledge that those responsible for this heinous crime will face the full weight of the law.

Needham’s initial court appearance on the murder charges has been scheduled, marking a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the community and serve as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime.
