Aldie Man Pleads Guilty to $7M Embezzlement Scheme

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Kevin Lee, 38, of Aldie, Virginia, pleaded guilty to a criminal information charging him with one count of wire fraud, a crime that netted him over $7,000,000.

According to court documents, Lee was the controller for a McLean company. His position granted him access to all the company’s finances, recordkeeping, and operational accounts. Between October 2018 and August 2021, Lee used his unique access to embezzle more than $7,000,000 through multiple transfers into his personal bank accounts.

Lee disguised these transactions as payments to vendors and by falsifying information in the company’s recordkeeping software. He also re-directed money from an existing line of credit in the company’s name to cover revenue shortfalls created by his crime.

Lee is scheduled to be sentenced on January 12, 2023. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber and Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Washington Criminal Division, after U.S. District Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff accepted the plea.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Peters, with assistance from former Assistant U.S. Attorney Monika Moore, is prosecuting the case.
