A federal grand jury returned an indictment against Kevin Leslie Gipson, 58, of Oroville, California, for attempted coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, announced U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
According to court documents, Gipson attempted to persuade, coerce, and entice a minor to engage in oral copulation and to commit lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 years old.
This case is the product of an investigation by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force/Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Delaney is prosecuting the case.
Kevin Leslie Gipson, 58, of Oroville, faces a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
The charges against Gipson are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
