Lafayette man Kevin Ralph Andrus, 37, is headed to federal prison for orchestrating a ruthless theft of nearly $1.5 million meant to protect his own sister. Andrus was sentenced Monday to 57 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud, marking the end of a betrayal that devastated a woman left vulnerable by injury.
Andrus, of Lafayette, Louisiana, was legally appointed curator of his sister’s estate after she suffered life-altering injuries in an automobile accident. Incapacitated and unable to manage her affairs, she trusted her brother to safeguard the $1.5 million settlement awarded to her as compensation. Instead, Andrus looted the funds, funneling the money into his personal and business accounts with cold calculation.
U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell handed down the sentence, which includes 57 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. Andrus must also pay $1,449,999.37 in restitution — a sum that may never fully restore what was stolen from his sister’s future.
According to court documents filed March 17, 2016, Andrus swore an oath to use the funds only for approved expenses benefiting his sister. He violated that duty repeatedly, spending the money on himself while his sister languished, unaware her financial lifeline was being drained. Only after a partial recovery did she discover the extent of the theft — a gutting revelation that exposed her brother’s greed.
The U.S. Secret Service led the investigation, unraveling a paper trail of fraudulent transfers and false representations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Myers P. Namie and David C. Joseph prosecuted the case, painting Andrus not as a caretaker, but as a predator who exploited the legal system to commit familial theft on a massive scale.
The case stands as a grim reminder of how power of attorney and court-appointed guardianships can be weaponized. For Andrus, the courtroom offered no sympathy. His actions weren’t just a crime — they were a betrayal of blood, now punished by federal law.
