Kevron Marques Byrd, Felon in Possession of Ammunition, California 2021

Fresno resident Kevron Marques Byrd, 21, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for being a felon in possession of ammunition, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

The indictment charges Byrd with one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition, a federal crime. According to court documents, Byrd was stopped by officers on July 7, 2021, and found with a backpack containing a ghost gun, a privately made firearm with no serial number, equipped with a high capacity magazine and 32 rounds of ammunition.

Byrd was on supervision following a prison sentence for a 2019 conviction for a firearms offense. The case is the product of an investigation by the Fresno Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Jean Berger is prosecuting the case. If convicted, Byrd faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Byrd’s case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program.

The PSN Program is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
