GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Gary Wayne Peters, 58, a resident of Key West, Florida, has been slapped with a nine-count indictment for masterminding an immigration fraud scheme that bilked an undocumented alien out of $25,000. According to federal prosecutors, Peters falsely claimed he could secure legal immigration status for the victim, known as ‘M.P.’, in exchange for the substantial sum.
The brazen conman is accused of eight counts of wire fraud and one count of encouraging and inducing an alien to reside illegally in the United States for profit. The indictment alleges that Peters duped M.P. by fabricating a connection with federal immigration agents, claiming he had already filed an immigration petition on M.P.’s behalf, and falsely asserting that these agents were processing M.P.’s documents.
Law enforcement sources reveal that no such immigration petition was ever filed, and the supposed agents cited by Peters do not exist within the Department of Homeland Security. The scam was a cold-hearted exploitation of the victim’s desperation for legal status, authorities say.
United States Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer for the Southern District of Florida hailed the investigative work of ICE-HSI and USCIS in bringing the case to light. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cristina Moreno is leading the prosecution against Peters.
As per standard procedure, an indictment is merely an accusation, and Gary Wayne Peters is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This grim case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to exploit the vulnerable for profit, underscoring the importance of vigilant law enforcement and justice.
