Jamil Whitley, a 38-year-old Washington, D.C. man, has been sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison for the June 11, 2020, shooting death of 32-year-old Kevin Redd, a father of four, at a Shell Gas Station in Northeast DC. Whitley was found guilty by a jury on May 12, 2026, on multiple charges including second-degree murder while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The deadly encounter occurred when Redd stopped at the gas station, and Whitley, who had arrived earlier, returned wearing a surgical mask and approached Redd.
The government’s evidence showed that Whitley and Redd had spoken to each other at the gas station before Whitley left and returned with a gun. The sentencing memorandum asked for the maximum guidelines of 35 years and four months, citing the severe harm caused to Redd’s four young children, who will now grow up without their father.
US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro expressed that the sentence imposed does not reflect the extraordinary damage caused by Whitley’s actions, and her office had sought a substantially longer sentence. The impact on Redd’s family, especially his children, will last a lifetime, underscoring the need for the strongest response from the justice system for violent conduct of this magnitude.
