Dismissal Of Conspiracy Count To Commit Tax Evasion Rocks Mobile Communities
A federal tax evasion case against Kimberly Hastie and John Hastie, Jr. took a dramatic turn as the United States government moved to dismiss a key charge.
Court documents show that Kimberly Hastie and John Hastie, Jr. were facing a superseding indictment in the Southern District of Alabama with a count of conspiracy to commit tax evasion.
However, in a stunning reversal, the United States Attorney’s office announced that it would be dismissing Count 18 of the indictment. This decision comes on the heels of a recent jury verdict in which Kimberly Hastie was acquitted of most of the charges against her, save for one public corruption count.
‘The great bulk of the charges against Ms. Hastie involved allegations of public corruption,’ stated United States Attorney Kenyen R. Brown. ‘With the exception of one public corruption charge, a jury consisting of Ms. Hastie’s peers returned a not guilty verdict in her favor.’
Brown continued, ‘Given this result, a further pursuit of the ancillary charge of conspiracy to commit tax evasion against Kimberly Hastie and John Hastie, Jr., is not in the best interest of justice at this time.’
The defendants, Kimberly Hastie and John Hastie, Jr., currently face a single public corruption charge following their acquittal on most other counts. No sentence or fine has been imposed as of yet.
As the case continues to unfold, residents of Mobile, Alabama, remain eager to see the outcome of the proceedings.
