Postal Worker Swiped $40 from Local Resident’s Mail, Feds Say

A local woman is facing federal charges after allegedly swiping $40 from a greeting card meant for a resident of Cranberry Township, according to court documents.

April Kovach, 39, of Yatesboro, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of theft of mail, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

According to the indictment, on or about October 8, 2014, Kovach abstracted and removed two $20 Federal Reserve notes that had been the contents of a greeting card envelope addressed to an individual in Cranberry Township.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The United States Postal Service – Office of Inspector General conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
