Tax Preparer Sentenced to 24 Months in Prison for Tax Fraud Scheme
Houston, Texas – In a shocking turn of events, local tax business owner Krystal Wright has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for aiding and assisting in the preparation and filing of false income tax returns. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Krystal Wright, the sole owner and only tax preparer at WW2F in Freeport for six years, pleaded guilty on April 17, 2024, to her crimes. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey V. Brown presided over the hearing, where it was revealed that Wright’s scheme caused a total sustained tax harm of $525,404.
According to the investigation, Wright prepared and filed approximately 83 federal income tax returns that contained false and fraudulent items between 2017 and 2020. These returns included qualified solar electric property costs, gifts by cash or check, business expenses, wages, salaries, tips, and supplies. Wright’s clients were not aware of the false items on their tax returns, as she would only provide them with the refund amount and the first two pages of the return.
The investigation, conducted by the IRS Criminal Investigation, found that Wright’s scheme was widespread and caused significant harm to taxpayers. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rodolfo Ramirez and James Hu prosecuted the case.
Krystal Wright will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. She was ordered to pay $525,404 in restitution as part of her sentence.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the accuracy of tax returns and the consequences of committing tax fraud. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
