A disturbing act of terrorism has been met with justice in Montgomery, Alabama. On November 21, 2024, a federal judge sentenced 27-year-old Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert to 108 months in prison for the malicious use of an explosive device outside of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office in Montgomery.
The explosive device, which was shrapnel-filled, was detonated during the early morning hours of February 24, 2024. The device was placed near the Attorney General’s Office in downtown Montgomery, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to the plea agreement and other court documents, Calvert admitted to manufacturing the device and using nails and screws as shrapnel. He also claimed to have no affiliation with Antifa, despite placing stickers with graphics advocating for various political ideologies on various downtown buildings prior to the detonation.
Law enforcement arrested Calvert on April 10, 2024, and the FBI investigated the case with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Assistant United States Attorneys Russell T. Duraski and Brett J. Talley for the Middle District of Alabama prosecuted the case.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland praised the sentencing, stating that acts of violence like this one against public institutions endanger public servants and entire communities and must not be tolerated.
The sentencing is a significant victory for the community and a reminder that those who attempt to intimidate or harm public officials will be held accountable.
