A Mexican national residing in the United States illegally has been handed a 21-month prison sentence for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Joel Terrazas Olvera, 51, was found in possession of a firearm on September 19, 2023, during a traffic stop in Rankin County, Mississippi. Olvera, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody by a Rankin County Sheriff’s Deputy.
A federal grand jury indicted Olvera for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He subsequently plead guilty to the charges on February 23, 2024.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel Goff prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
The prosecution of Olvera’s case is part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program. This program aims to reduce violent crime by targeting the most violent offenders and partnering with local prevention and reentry programs.
U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Acting Special Agent in Charge Eric DeLaune of Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans, along with Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, made the announcement regarding Olvera’s sentencing.
