GULFPORT, MS – Jose Guadalupe Perez-Velasquez, 29, a citizen of Mexico, has confessed to the federal crime of unlawful reentry by an alien after removal. The plea was entered today before Senior U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr., signaling another win for federal authorities cracking down on repeat immigration violations.
According to court documents, Perez-Velasquez’s troubles began March 25, 2019, when the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office apprehended him on misdemeanor charges of domestic disturbance of family and providing false information to law enforcement. During that arrest, he admitted to being in the country illegally. ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations took custody and confirmed a disturbing pattern: Perez-Velasquez had already been removed from the United States – twice.
The first removal occurred in 2009. He snuck back in, only to be caught and deported again in 2010. This second deportation carried a 20-year ban on legally reentering the U.S. – a warning Perez-Velasquez clearly ignored. He faces a potential maximum sentence of 2 years in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release and a hefty fine of up to $250,000.
But prison isn’t the end of the line for Perez-Velasquez. Upon completion of his sentence, he will almost certainly be deported again, likely ending any further attempts to exploit the U.S. immigration system. U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst made it clear that this case underscores the commitment to enforcing immigration laws and protecting national security.
“This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to identifying and removing those who repeatedly violate our nation’s immigration laws,” Hurst stated. He specifically praised the seamless cooperation between the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement Removal Operations division, and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stan Harris.
Perez-Velasquez is scheduled for sentencing on August 22, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Guirola. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the final outcome, as well as the ongoing efforts of federal agencies to combat illegal immigration and related crimes in the region. This case serves as a stark reminder that repeated violations of immigration law carry serious consequences.
