A Washington D.C. jury has delivered a guilty verdict in the high-profile case of Marcus Walker, 23, accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend’s new romantic partner in a Northeast Washington apartment.
Walker was convicted of second-degree murder while armed, as well as two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon against an adult female and a six-year-old child who were present during the shooting. He also faced charges of second-degree cruelty to children and several firearms-related offenses.
The verdict was handed down on May 7, 2024, following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the guilty finding.
According to prosecutors, Walker became enraged when he learned his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, Erik King, were engaging in intimate relations in the bedroom. The defendant spent nearly an hour sending aggressive text messages before bursting into the room and firing multiple shots, striking King twice – once in the chest and another in the scrotum.
The six-year-old child was also present in the bedroom when the shots rang out, narrowly escaping the hail of bullets. King was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police Department led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren Galloway and Alec Levy handling the prosecution. The case is set for sentencing on July 19, 2024, before the Honorable Robert Okun.
