Malik Bilal, 41 of Washington, D.C., was today sentenced to 22 years in prison for the brutal murder of his co-worker Alonzo Gregory Beasley. The heinous crime occurred on July 6, 2014, when a confrontation over construction job disputes turned deadly.
Bilal was found guilty in November 2016 following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He was sentenced to 22 years by Judge Milton C. Lee and will be placed on five years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence.
The incident began when Bilal and Beasley, 52, were working together on a construction crew in Northeast Washington. A heated argument erupted over job-related issues, culminating in Bilal’s knife attack on an unarmed Beasley. Despite Beasley’s pleas, the attacker pursued him, stabbing him multiple times before driving off.
Afterward, Bilal attempted to flee the scene and changed his appearance. However, MPD detectives were swift in their investigation, locating his truck and linking it to the crime. Despite Bilal reporting his truck stolen and seeing it last on July 4th, police found it with Beasley’s DNA inside just days later.
U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips and Interim Chief of MPD Peter Newsham commended the diligence of law enforcement and forensic science teams in their efforts to bring Bilal to justice.
In addition to the sentencing, Assistant U.S. Attorneys George A. Pace and Glenn Kirsc were recognized for their roles in the case.
