On January 27, 2026, a disturbing scene unfolded at a Minneapolis town hall meeting hosted by US Rep. Ilhan Omar. Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, stood up from the front row and rapidly approached Rep. Omar as she was speaking, spraying her with apple cider vinegar from a syringe. The liquid, which contained acetic acid, landed on Rep. Omar’s clothing and skin. Kazmierczak’s actions were reportedly motivated by his disagreement with Rep. Omar’s political views.
Kazmierczak’s outburst was quickly subdued by security guards, and he was arrested by Minneapolis Police officers. During his arrest, Kazmierczak spontaneously stated, ‘I squirted vinegar.’ The town hall meeting was temporarily disrupted, but Rep. Omar later continued her remarks.
Kazmierczak pleaded guilty to one count of Assaulting a United States Officer in U.S. District Court. The case highlights a growing concern about political violence and the need for protection of elected officials. US Attorney Daniel N. Rosen and FBI Minneapolis Division Special Agent in Charge Christopher D. Dotson condemned the attack, emphasizing that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are working to prevent and investigate attacks on elected officials and those who serve the nation. Kazmierczak’s conviction serves as a testament to the importance of interagency collaboration and the commitment to upholding democracy.
