A 31-year-old Minnesota man has been convicted of throwing Molotov Cocktails at a Minneapolis café that proudly displayed a Pride flag. Firomsa Ahmed Umar was found guilty of arson and attempted arson, possession of an unregistered destructive device, and attempted arson after two brazen attacks on Fletcher’s Ice Cream & Café.
On October 19, 2025, Umar lobbed a homemade Molotov Cocktail at the café’s front windows, causing a massive blast of flames. Employees quickly extinguished the fire, but not before it had done significant damage.
The next day, Umar returned to the scene, attempted to open the door, and threw another Molotov Cocktail, which failed to ignite due to a faulty wick. However, it still caused further damage to the window.
When arrested, Umar had a gas can, a lighter, and a third bottle filled with an ingredient for improvised napalm, along with other Molotov Cocktail components. The jury also found that Umar selected Fletcher’s as the target because of its prominent display of a Pride flag, and had previously painted homophobic graffiti outside a local apartment complex.
Umar’s crimes are a stark reminder of the dangers of hate-fueled violence. His conviction brings some measure of justice to the community, but the true test will be in holding him accountable for his actions.
