Shawn Marshall Owens, Hobbs Act Robbery, Washington 2023

A string of brazen armed robberies at six Metro by T-Mobile stores in Washington DC has landed a 44-year-old man behind bars for 67 months in federal prison.

Shawn Marshall Owens, a District of Columbia resident, pleaded guilty to six counts of interference with interstate commerce by robbery (Hobbs Act Robbery) on July 1, 2024. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Kelly, who also ordered Owens to serve three years of supervised release.

The first robbery occurred on July 14, 2023, at the Metro by T-Mobile store on the 4500 block East Capitol Street, NE. Owens pointed a black handgun at an employee and demanded cash and cell phones. He fled with three phones and about $500 in cash.

Just two weeks later, Owens struck again at the same store, this time handing the employee a backpack and ordering him to empty the register into it. Owens grabbed six or seven cell phones and left the store with the loot.

Owens’ string of robberies continued on September 2, 2023, when he entered the Metro by T-Mobile store on the 1400 block North Capitol Street, NW. He produced a silver and black handgun and demanded all the Apple iPhones. However, the employee informed Owens that the store did not have any Apple iPhones in stock.

Owens then turned his attention to the cash register, opening it and grabbing $446 in cash. He also took four phones from the counter and asked the employee where the store’s big safe was located.

Owens was arrested shortly after the final robbery on December 10, 2023, at a Metro by T-Mobile store on the 5400 block of Georgia Ave NW. When police apprehended him, he was in possession of the cash and a box of phones worth $3,169.
