Darrell Janis, Abusive Sexual Contact, South Dakota 2015

KYLE, SD – Darrell Janis, 57, of Kyle, South Dakota, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury on two counts of Abusive Sexual Contact. The alleged crimes, committed December 11, 2015, involve a child under the age of 12. Janis entered a plea of not guilty on October 21, 2016, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann.

According to the indictment, Janis allegedly used force to commit the abusive sexual acts within the Kyle city limits. U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the indictment on October 18, 2016, kicking off a legal battle that will likely leave lasting scars on the victim and the community.

If convicted on both counts, Janis faces a potentially life-altering sentence: up to life in federal custody. Beyond imprisonment, he could also be slapped with a $250,000 fine, five years of supervised release following his sentence, and a mandatory $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution to the victim may also be ordered by the court.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. These agencies worked together to build a case against Janis, and now Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen will lead the prosecution. The collaboration highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling sensitive crimes like this.

Janis was released on bond, pending the upcoming trial, which is currently scheduled for December 27, 2016. He maintains his innocence, and as with all defendants in the American justice system, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.

Important Note: These charges are merely accusations, and Darrell Janis is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
