Kyle Martin, a 29-year-old Rapid City man, was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota, in Rapid City.
On July 12, 2021, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken handed down the sentence, which includes 3 years of supervised release and a $100.00 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Martin, a previously convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms, was found in possession of a Smith & Wesson, model 581, .357 Magnum caliber, double-action revolver in March 2020 after coming into contact with law enforcement in Rapid City.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), a violent crime reduction effort led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson.
PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
At the time of sentencing, Martin was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
