Assault with a Dangerous Weapon Rocks South Dakota Community
A Kyle, South Dakota man has been indicted for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, leaving a community shaken. Lloyd Yankton, Jr., 36, has been accused of committing the heinous crime.
According to officials, the incident occurred when Yankton assaulted a woman near Kyle with a wooden board during an argument, causing multiple injuries. The charge is merely an accusation, and Yankton is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Yankton was indicted on December 20, 2016, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on December 30, 2016. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson is prosecuting the case.
Yankton was detained pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The community is left to wonder how such a heinous crime could occur in their midst. As the case unfolds, one thing is certain: justice will be served.
