Mounds Man Found Guilty of First Degree Murder in Indian Country

A federal jury today convicted Kyle Quentin Sago, a 31-year-old Mounds man, for shooting and killing an acquaintance the day the two rekindled an old friendship.

According to court documents, Sago was found guilty of first degree murder in Indian Country, two counts of felon in possession of ammunition, and causing death by using and discharging a firearm in the commission of first degree murder.

The crime occurred on July 25, 2020, within the Muscogee Nation reservation. Witnesses reported that Sago shot and killed Daniel Morgan, an acquaintance, after the two rekindled their friendship.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ross Lenhardt praised the jury’s verdict, stating, ‘A federal jury evaluated compelling evidence presented by federal prosecutors and found Kyle Sago guilty of murdering Daniel Morgan. I am thankful for exemplary performance by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ross Lenhardt and Aaron Jolly during the three-day trial.’

Sago’s defense team argued that he had acted in self-defense, claiming that Morgan had approached him with anger and threatened him. However, prosecutors presented evidence that Sago had initiated the confrontation and shot Morgan multiple times as he retreated.

The verdict marks the second murder conviction for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tulsa this week, demonstrating their commitment to upholding the law and fighting for justice on behalf of victims of gun violence and their families.

Kyle Quentin Sago faces sentencing in federal court and could face life in prison without parole for the first degree murder conviction.
