La Plant Man Charged with Assault
Norman Little Shield, Jr., a 21-year-old man from La Plant, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a federal crime. The incident occurred in July 2012, when Little Shield assaulted an adult male in Cherry Creek, South Dakota.
According to the U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson, Little Shield appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on February 25, 2013, and admitted to the charges. The maximum penalty for this crime is 10 years of custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 special assessment.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is handling the prosecution.
Little Shield was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for May 13, 2013.
