Lafayette man faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen pistol, authorities announced Thursday.
Paul Sidney Breaux, 37, of Lafayette, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell to one count of possession of a stolen firearm, according to court documents.
Breaux allegedly purchased the Springfield Armory Model 1911 pistol on the street five days before his arrest on May 1, 2018, from some younger males, police said.
The investigation was conducted by the ATF and the Lafayette Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic Rossetti prosecuting the case.
As part of the plea agreement, Breaux faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The sentencing date has been set for October 31, 2018.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made turning the tide of rising violent crime in America a top priority, and the PSN program has been successful in bringing together all levels of law enforcement to address this issue.
