Laguna Pueblo Man Sentenced for Assaulting Acoma Pueblo Woman

BAD BEHAVIOR ON THE RESERVATION: Bradford Day, 41, an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for assaulting an Acoma Pueblo woman.

According to court documents, Day threw a pint bottle of beer at the victim’s face on April 26, 2014, causing her to suffer bruises, cuts, and the loss of three teeth. The assault occurred in a location within Acoma Pueblo in Cibola County, New Mexico.

Day was arrested on May 6, 2014, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He later pled guilty to a felony information charging him with assault resulting in serious bodily injury on December 31, 2014.

In entering his guilty plea, Day admitted to assaulting the victim by throwing an unopened bottle of beer at her face and knocking out three of her teeth. The victim suffered serious injuries as a result of the assault.

The case was investigated by the Laguna/Acoma Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services and the Acoma Tribal Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Adams prosecuted the case.

The case was brought under the Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (TSAUSA) Pilot Project, which aims to increase the likelihood that violent offenses against Native women are prosecuted in federal or tribal court. This project is sponsored by the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women and is part of the ongoing efforts to increase engagement and action on public safety in tribal communities.

Day will be on supervised release for three years after completing his prison sentence. The sentence is a significant blow to Day and serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent behavior on the reservation.
