A 26-year-old Dayton resident has been charged with attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.
According to court documents, Laith Waleed Alebbini, a citizen of Jordan and legal permanent resident of the U.S., allegedly attempted to provide support in the form of personnel, namely himself, to ISIS.
Alebbini was arrested on April 26 at the Cincinnati/Kentucky International Airport and charged with the same crime by criminal complaint. He has remained in custody since his arrest.
Attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, as prescribed by Congress.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes officers and agents from various law enforcement agencies, investigated this case. U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman commended the investigation, as well as the prosecution team, which includes First Assistant Vipal J. Patel, Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace, and Trial Attorney Justin Sher.
Alebbini is currently in custody and will face trial for his alleged crimes. An indictment merely contains allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation in preventing and investigating terrorist activities.
