U.S. Attorney McCoy Announces $495,323 Grant to Lancaster County School District to Address School Violence
Columbia, South Carolina – In a move to combat the rising threat of school violence, the Lancaster County School District has received a $495,323 grant from the U.S. Attorney’s office. The grant, awarded by the Office of Justice Programs, is part of a larger effort to bolster school security and support first responders.
U.S. Attorney Peter M. McCoy, Jr. made the announcement, stating, "Only by removing the threat of violence from our schools can we expect our kids to reap the full benefits of their education, and only after making our places of learning safe can we ask our teachers to instruct and inspire as they are trained to do," he said. "The Office of Justice Programs is committed to securing our schools from danger and giving our kids the support they need to learn, grow and thrive."
The grant provides funds to develop and implement threat assessment and intervention teams, as well as operate technology solutions such as anonymous reporting systems for threats of school violence. This includes mobile telephone applications, hotlines, and websites.
According to Principal Deputy Attorney General Katharine T. Sullivan, "The Department of Justice is committed to securing our schools from danger and giving our kids the support they need to learn, grow and thrive." The grant is part of a larger effort to address school violence, with over $87 million in funding allocated to bolster school security and support first responders.
