Lancaster Woman Sentenced for Medicaid Scam
Tammie Sensenig, 45, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud. The former behavioral health consultant made false representations to obtain her position, despite being previously excluded from providing healthcare to Medicaid beneficiaries due to prior convictions related to Medicaid fraud.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Sensenig had been excluded from providing healthcare to Medicaid beneficiaries after being convicted of Medicaid fraud in the past. However, she made false representations to obtain her position as a behavioral health consultant, resulting in Medicaid paying approximately $84,500 for her services.
The case was investigated by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Medical Fraud Control Section and the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chelsea Schinnour is prosecuting the case.
A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The maximum penalty under federal law is 10 years, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is also required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational and medical needs. For these reasons, the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant.
Tammie Sensenig’s guilty plea is a major victory for law enforcement and a reminder that those who commit healthcare fraud will be held accountable. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania will continue to work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the Medicaid system and ensure that those who commit healthcare fraud are brought to justice.
