Lantry Man Convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter

A 20-year-old man from Lantry, South Dakota, has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter following a deadly car crash on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation.

Charg Hebb was driving his 2005 Pontiac Bonneville at a high speed and recklessly on the wrong side of the road when he caused a head-on collision with a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer on County Road 50 near Lantry on October 12, 2012.

The passenger in Hebb’s vehicle was killed in the crash. The investigation into the incident was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is prosecuting the case. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and Hebb is set to be sentenced on July 2, 2014. He was released on bond pending sentencing.

The maximum penalty Hebb faces upon conviction is 1 year and 1 day of custody, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 fine to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the guilty plea on April 15, 2014. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences that can result from such behavior.
