LaPlante Sentenced for Assault

A disturbing incident unfolded in a Dupree bar when Loren LaPlante, Jr., 24, sucker-punched an adult male victim in the face without provocation.

The assault, which occurred on January 9, 2015, left the victim needing medical attention for his facial injuries.

LaPlante, an Eagle Butte, South Dakota, resident, was intoxicated at the time of the incident and had been involved in a verbal confrontation with the victim.

The victim, who had finished playing darts, approached LaPlante, and in a shocking display of violence, LaPlante struck the victim without just cause or excuse.

LaPlante was later indicted by a federal grand jury on February 11, 2015, and pleaded guilty to Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding on March 16, 2015.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno sentenced LaPlante to 18 months of probation and ordered him to pay $100.96 in restitution and $25 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on May 8, 2015.

This case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Law Enforcement Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuting the case.
