Larenzo Burnett, 22, Sentenced to 99 Months in Federal Prison

In a shocking turn of events, a Battle Creek, Michigan man has been sentenced to over eight years in federal prison for his role in a tragic manslaughter case. Larenzo Burnett, 22, was found guilty of being a felon and drug user in possession of a firearm after a string of events unfolded on December 24, 2020.

According to court documents, Burnett fled from a traffic stop and possessed a Taurus 9mm pistol just two days after shooting a female victim in the face. The incident left the community reeling, and law enforcement worked tirelessly to bring Burnett to justice.

At the guilty plea on January 5, 2022, Burnett admitted to possessing the firearm despite being an unlawful user of marijuana and having a previous conviction for intimidation with a dangerous weapon in 2020. The court also revealed that Burnett attempted to obstruct justice by attempting to influence a witness.

United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Burnett must serve 99 months in federal prison, followed by 14 days in jail and a fine of $100. Additionally, Burnett will serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Liz Dupuich and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Burnett is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison, bringing an end to this disturbing case.
