Larry Lee Emerson, a 36-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer in New Mexico. Emerson resides in Toadlena, N.M.

According to the indictment, Emerson assaulted a Navajo Nation police officer on July 6, 2016, in San Juan County, N.M. The officer was attempting to arrest Emerson at the time of the assault.

Emerson was arrested on August 9, 2016, and subsequently indicted on August 23, 2016. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison at sentencing.

The case was investigated by the Farmington office of the FBI and the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elaine Y. Ramirez is prosecuting the case.

Emerson has been in custody since his arrest and remains detained pending a sentencing hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.
