Larry Mitchell Hopkins, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, New Mexico 2023
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Larry Mitchell Hopkins, a 70-year-old man from Flora Vista, New Mexico, was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Hopkins, also known as Johnny Horton Jr., previously pleaded guilty to the offense on January 2. In his plea agreement, Hopkins admitted to committing the offense in San Juan County, New Mexico by possessing nine pistols, rifles, and shotguns on November 28, 2017.
Additionally, Hopkins admitted to possessing ammunition after being previously convicted of felony offenses in Michigan, Oregon, and South Dakota, including illegal weapon possession and impersonating a peace officer.
The FBI investigated this case, with assistance from the Sunland Park Police Department in arresting Hopkins. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico prosecuted the case.
Hopkins’ guilty plea and subsequent sentence serve as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
