ALBANY, NY – Larry Peterkin, 46, of Schenectady, is headed back to prison after receiving a 46-month federal sentence for being an illegally armed felon. The bust, a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rotterdam Police Department, adds another chapter to Peterkin’s lengthy rap sheet.
Federal prosecutors detailed how Peterkin was caught driving in Rotterdam, New York on November 14, 2021, with a pair of handguns: a 9mm Springfield Armory and a .25 caliber Raven Arms MP25. The Raven Arms pistol had its serial number deliberately scratched off, a clear attempt to hide its origins – and likely, a shady past. But Peterkin’s troubles weren’t just about the guns themselves.
Peterkin’s prior convictions slammed the door shut on his right to possess firearms. Court records show he’s been convicted of second-degree manslaughter, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. For a man with that history, carrying any gun is a federal offense. The feds didn’t mess around.
U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and ATF Special Agent in Charge John B. DeVito announced the sentencing yesterday, signaling a continued crackdown on illegal firearms and repeat offenders. Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes delivered the 46-month sentence, and tacked on an additional 3-year term of supervised release to begin when Peterkin eventually gets out.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin Segovia handled the prosecution, building a case that clearly demonstrated Peterkin’s disregard for the law. The ATF and Rotterdam PD’s investigation proved crucial in securing the conviction. This case serves as a stark reminder that possessing firearms with a felony record carries serious consequences, and federal agencies are actively working to keep these weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
While 46 months is a significant sentence, it remains to be seen if it’s enough to deter Peterkin from returning to his old ways. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any future developments. The streets of Schenectady are a little safer, for now, but vigilance remains key.
