Raymond VanBuskirk, Unlawful Possession of Firearms, New York 2016

Raymond VanBuskirk, 45, of Jamestown, NY, has been sentenced to six months in prison for unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon. This sentence was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., VanBuskirk was found to have moved two rifles, one shotgun, and over one thousand rounds of .223 caliber ammunition from his home to another location for safekeeping in May 2016. Additionally, VanBuskirk retained a third rifle at his home, which was recovered by federal agents on June 29, 2016.

VanBuskirk has a prior New York State felony conviction for sale of a controlled substance, which prohibited him from legally possessing firearms and ammunition. Despite this, he chose to disregard the law and put himself and others at risk by possessing these firearms and ammunition.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Ashan Benedict; the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Adam S. Cohen; and the Jamestown Police Department, under the direction of Chief Harry Snellings.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Wei Xiang handled the case, which highlights the importance of enforcing laws related to firearms possession by convicted felons. The sentence handed down to VanBuskirk serves as a reminder that those who choose to break the law will be held accountable for their actions.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced the sentencing, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe from individuals who pose a risk to public safety. The investigation and sentencing of VanBuskirk demonstrate the effective collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies in combating crime and upholding the law.
