Anthony Margarito Berumen, Methamphetamine Trafficking, New Mexico 2016

LAS CRUCES – In a stunning blow to the methamphetamine trade in New Mexico, Anthony Margarito Berumen, 32, of Las Cruces, has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for his role in a drug trafficking ring.

Berumen was busted on February 9, 2016, following an investigation that revealed he had sold over four grams of methamphetamine to undercover agents. The transactions took place in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, in December 2015.

His arrest stemmed from a criminal complaint charging him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Berumen was later indicted on three counts of distributing the drug, which included selling it near a school.

On January 12, 2017, Berumen entered a guilty plea to the charges. He admitted to conducting multiple drug transactions, including one in a middle school parking lot in Las Cruces.

The case against Berumen was vigorously prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Balla and Sarah M. Davenport of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office. The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI’s Las Cruces office and the New Mexico State Police.

This sentence sends a clear message that federal law enforcement will not tolerate drug trafficking in our communities. Berumen’s sentence includes six years of supervised release, ensuring his continued monitoring after his prison term.
