A Starkville man has been sentenced to almost four years in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Lasang Kemp, 38, was found in possession of a Taurus 9mm handgun and a Zastava 5.56mm handgun in Starkville, Mississippi on March 4, 2021.
Kemp, a convicted felon, pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and was sentenced to 46 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Starkville Police Department, and the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department.
U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner said, “Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals will always be a priority for this office.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Jermicha Fomby added, “Mr. Kemp’s sentencing should serve as a warning to those bad actors who unlawfully possess firearms.”
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the nation.
The program, launched by the Attorney General in 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
