DA LLAS – In a bizarre incident, a former resident of Garland, Texas, aimed a laser pointer at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter in August 2013, putting lives at risk. The reckless act was committed by Steven Alexander Chavez, Jr., 23.
Chavez pleaded guilty earlier this year to an indictment charging one count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. He was subsequently sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis to eight months in federal prison.
According to documents filed in the case, Chavez knowingly aimed the beam of a laser at the DPS helicopter from the backyard of a friend, while the helicopter was flying overhead. This incident led to a thorough investigation by the FBI, Texas DPS, and the Garland Police Department.
Chavez was later arrested by special agents with the FBI in Lubbock, Texas, where he had recently relocated from Garland. He was initially released on bond following his initial court appearance.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Burns prosecuted the case, ensuring Chavez faced the consequences of his actions. This incident highlights the dangers posed by individuals recklessly aiming laser pointers at aircraft.
As a result of Chavez’s actions, the public is reminded of the importance of responsible behavior and the severe penalties that come with putting lives at risk. The eight-month prison sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in such reckless behavior.
