Defendants Shut Down, Ordered to Compensate Taxpayers
A federal court in the Eastern District of Michigan has permanently shut down two Detroit-area tax return preparers and their business, citing numerous schemes to file fraudulent federal income tax returns.
Accused of preparing false tax returns, Latavia Garrett, Latrina Hall, and their company, Detroit Tax Solution LLC, allegedly engaged in various schemes, including reporting false income and expenses from fictitious businesses, claiming false tax credits, and underreporting wage income.
The IRS estimated that the defendants’ actions resulted in a combined loss exceeding $1.2 million for tax years 2019 and 2020.
Defendants consented to the permanent injunction, which requires them to notify customers and post the injunction on their social media profiles for the next five years.
Latavia Garrett, Latrina Hall, and their company, Detroit Tax Solution LLC, are permanently enjoined from preparing federal tax returns and owning or operating any tax return preparation business in the future.
Taxpayers are advised to remain vigilant against unscrupulous tax preparers and to check the IRS website for information on choosing a reputable tax return preparer.
